Carpentry Technology

The Architectural Engineering program instills students with the knowledge and skills that lead to employment and advancement in the field of architecture. The course work enables the graduate to work in architectural or building construction related jobs or continue toward an advanced degree in a related field. The architectural technician will be involved in work requiring a knowledge of computer applications, including computer-aided drafting, construction materials, mechanical and structural systems, estimating, site and building design fundamentals, presentation methods, building codes, and specifications. Graduates may work as designers, estimators, detailers, model builders, illustrators, product representatives and specification writers in the public and private sector. Employment is also available in related industries such as building engineering, construction, code enforcement, materials manufacturing, and residential design/build contracting.

The HVAC (Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning) Engineering program introduces students to the residential central comfort heating and cooling systems. Students learn industry specific theoretical and hands-on skills leading to careers in the rapidly expanding industry. With the ever growing high demand for industry experts to keep up with new technology and climate change awareness, we provide a curriculum rich in building load design, combustion analysis, thermodynamics, hydronics, as well as green alternatives. Upon completion of our program, graduates can earn Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certification, National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) certification, and National Oilheat Research Alliance (NORA) certification.

Our Carpentry Technology program provides a broad education in carpentry theory and practical applications. Our students are introduced to carpentry through cabinetry. Students receive a blend of theory and practical applications with interactive discussions on carpentry techniques. In addition, our students work with building cabinets, working on detailing and an introduction to residential carpentry. Our carpentry students continually expand on theory and begin residential installations that require developing rough foundations, inner wall and window structures. During senior year for students, our focus shifts to rough carpentry where students will apply all theories learned by totally dismantling an entire house and rebuilding from the ground up. 

 

Electrical Engineering

The Electrical Engineering program at Bronx Design is a nationally and state certified program. Students begin their major in the 10th grade with an intensive study of electrical safety and follow with topics in electrical theory, electronics, fire alarm systems, residential, industrial, and commercial wiring, and motor theory and motor controls. Over the years our industry partners have expressed great satisfaction with Bronx Design electrical graduates, resulting in a high employment rate for students who complete our program. This success has also garnished the interest of various trade organizations, which have awarded scholarship monies to our students. The following organizations have annually provided career opportunities and or awarded scholarships to Bronx Design electrical students: International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (Local Union #3), Metro North, NYC Transit, and Con Edison. Furthermore, many of the industry partners of the electrical program require and pay for college in addition to providing them with high paying jobs.

The Plumbing Technology program covers both residential and commercial components of the field, applying theory to practical situations. While enrolled, students will focus on basic plumbing skills, and will eventually learn advanced skills such as designing, sizing, estimating, and working with a variety of plumbing systems. Our students will also learn to use professional equipment to install, replace and repair faucets, sinks, toilets and water heaters. Students will also fit, assemble and prepare all types of piping (steel, cast iron, copper and plastic) for soil waste, vent and potable water applications. Potential employers are MTA, Con Edison, Plumbers Local 1, CUNY, NYC Health and Hospitals, and the Division of School Facilities. While attending school, students also work as interns with these organizations in order to enhance the classroom learning experience.

CTE ADVISORY COUNCIL

Our Advisory Council consists of members who represent the construction business and CTE industry, labor organizations, and practitioners within the building trades, of whom share a working knowledge of the job tasks and competencies required for related occupations, related labor market needs, and courses necessary to meet these needs. They provide advice in the design, development, delivery, evaluation, and continuous improvement of our Career and Technical Education programs. They meet on a regular basis and oftern participate in professional development activities to help support our CTE students and instructional staff.

The Bronx Design and Construction Academy works closely with the Career and Technical Education Division at the New York City Department of Education which manages strategic partnerships between schools and corporations across several career clusters.

The two Commissions that the BDCA subscribes to are as follows:

Engineering Architecture and Robotics Commission seeks to provide educational and training opportunities for students in a sector in which employers need highly skilled workers. It is chaired by Denise Richardson, Executive Director of The General Contractors Association of New York.

Construction and Sustainability Commission supports a diverse range of CTE programs from traditional trades such as plumbing and electrical to emerging areas such as historical preservation arts, green building and architecture. The commission is chaired by Nicole Bertran, Vice President, Edward J. Malloy Construction Skills Initiative.
